In 1997, the year of the 50th anniversary of Indian independence, the US Senate passed a resolution, designating it as a National (US) Day of celebration of Indian and American Democracy.
- The resolution of the National (US) Day of celebration of Indian and American Democracy was passed on 15 August 1997.
- Mr Specter submitted this resolution on June 18 which was then considered and permitted by the committee to be passed on the day of India's Independence.
- The resolution highlighted the common grounds shared by India and the US. Both the countries shared a history of being colonised by the English.
- India also shared the same principles about democracy with the US. Being the largest country practising democracy, The Indian government, like the US, considered the Indian citizen above all that matters.
- On this date, the US citizens were called upon to observe the day with appropriate celebrations and activities.
