India adopted the principle of universal adult franchise when the present Constitution was enacted in the year1949 which  was implemented on January 26, 1950.

Explanation:

• Since the 1928 Nehru report, the national movement had committed itself to universal adult suffrage (UAF). This dream was further reinforced by anti-colonial mass nationalism following World War I.
• The members of the Constituent Assembly felt when they were making a constitution the fight for freedom had prepared the masses for universal adult suffrage, which would help foster democracy and break the grip of traditional class, gender, and caste hierarchies.
• The people of India therefore have a direct role to play in electing their representatives. In addition, every resident of the country will also vote in elections regardless of their social background.These representatives are accountable to the people.
