Democracies are measured by the number of voters. India has the largest number. I am discounting make-believe democracies like the "People's Republic of China".

India became the world's largest democracy since independence. The wise people of the world had given us 10-15 years before breaking apart into a hundred countries in an orgy of violence. Because we have always been a continent sized country, with more diversity than say, Europe. And Europe had just seen two huge wars, the ones they call "world wars". The same ones that, looked at from outside, were tribal conflicts.

It is the farsightedness of our early leaders that created a rock solid foundation for our republic to survive and thrive through the massive challenges we faced. In 2004, some American commentator (the country that lays claim to be the leader of democracies in the world) said that 'a nation housing the world's largest number of poor & very poor, with the largest number of illiterates, with an 83% Hindu population, had voted a Christian woman to power. She stepped aside, and her place was taken by a Sikh, who was sworn in as PM by a President who was a Muslim. When, oh when, will the US elect its first non-white or non-Christian or non-male President?'

That came to pass four years later with Barack Obama. They may have their first woman President this time, India had its first woman PM in 1966, a 50-year lead.

Answer -

India is the second largest country in terms of population. India is a diverse country and it has all relief features in it- like Mountains which act as a safe boundary for the country, plateaus which are the storehouse of minerals, plains, deserts, islands and coastal plains.

India is a democratic country. All people are equal before law. Everyone is considered equal and have right to vote and express their opinions. They have right to choose the leaders for the country through voting the representatives.

hope it helps
