Largest cotton consumer in the world
Explanation:
- On the 2nd World Cotton Day, on October 7, 2020, Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Minister of Textiles and Women & Child Development, introduced the 1st ever Brand & Logo for Indian Cotton via Video Conferencing. In the world cotton trade, India's premium cotton is currently recognised as "Kasturi Cotton."
- Whiteness, Brightness, Softness, Purity, Luster, Uniqueness, and Indianness will all be represented by the Kasturi Cotton trademark. The Hon'ble Minister remarked, "Today is a much-awaited event, as Indian Cotton has been awarded with a Brand & Logo."
- The 2nd World Cotton Day is being commemorated today all across the world, making this event even more significant.
- Cotton plays a vital role in the Indian economy, according to the Minister. ‘Cotton is one of India's most important commercial crops, providing livelihood to around 6.00 million cotton farmers,' she said.
- India is the world's second-biggest cotton producer and the world's largest cotton consumer.
- India produces over 6.00 million tonnes of cotton per year, accounting for roughly 23% of global cotton production. India generates over 51% of the world's total organic cotton production, demonstrating the country's commitment to sustainability.
- Smt. Irani stated that a certification system based on similar international standards validated through an internationally acceptable institutional structure is essential to assure the sustainability, integrity, and end-to-end traceability of organic products.
- As a result, the Ministry of Textiles, in collaboration with APEDA (Ministry of Commerce and Industry), has established a certification system for organic cotton, which will be phased in throughout the textile value chain.
- APEDA has also taken up the issue of prescribing a certification system for non-organic cotton so that cotton utilisation can be appropriately increased.
- Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) made the highest-ever Minimum Support Price (MSP) operation of cotton, according to the Minister, and he is hoping that purchase under MSP will be enhanced during the upcoming cotton season.
- CCI has opened 430 procurement centres across the country, with payments sent digitally to farmers' accounts within 72 hours.
All these developments ensure that the India is the largest consumer of cotton.
