India is located in South Asia with the Arabian sea on the West, Indian Ocen on the east and south and China to the North. It is also surrounded by Pakistan, Bangladesh and has a sea border with Srilanka and Maldives.
The area is home to more than 1/6 of the world's population and there is a huge competition among various countries for regional resources and hegemony, particularly with Pakistan in terms of Water, land and other things.
However, India's location also means it lies near an area which seas the highest amount crude oil being passed near it's waters as Middle Eastern Oil is shipped to China, Japan and other Pacific countries.
In this regard, India is very important to maintain smooth supply and protection of this oil

The Indian Landmass has a central location between the East and West Asia. The Trans-Indian ocean routes which connect the countries of Europe in the West and the countries of the East Asia provide a strategic central location to India. The Deccan peninsula protrudes into the Indian Ocean and that helped India to established close contact with West Asia, Africa and Europe from the Western coast and with South East and East Asia from the Eastern coast.
