ICAR or Indian Council of Agricultural Research was the organisation that was responsible for India attaining self-sufficiency in food production, especially under the stewardship of Dr M.S. Swaminathan, who was its Director General from 1972-1979. This visionary ushered in India's Green Revolution, which helped the country become self-sufficient in food production. Dr Swaminathan's achievement was so significant that the reputed Time magazine, in 1999, named him in the "Time 20" list, a list of 20 of the most influential among Asian people.
