Answer:

India has three tier government system, i.e. at the centre level, at the state level and the local level.

This new system of local government is the largest experiment in democracy conducted anywhere in the world. There are now about 36 lakh elected representatives in the Panchayats and municipalities all over the country. This number is bigger than the population of many countries in the world. Constitutional status for local self-government has helped deepening democracy in our country. It has also increased women's representation and voice in our democracy.

India's local governments are providing that India is a true democratic country but even then, there are three major defects in the lowest tire of government

Explanation:

India has 3 tier govt. system, that is at the center level, state level & the local level. The system of local govt is the biggest experiment that has been conducted with democracy. There are around 36 lakhs elected representatives in the municipalities & panchayats across the nation. This number is greater than the populace of several nations. Constitutional status for local self-govt has facilitated in deepening democracy in our nation. It has also resulted in the increase of women representation & voice in our nation. However there are some defects in the local-govts

Problems of  the Local  Govt.

  • There are several difficulties. While elections are being held regularly and with zeal, gram sabhas  are not being held regularly
  • Many state govts have not transferred/shifted significant powers to the local self-govts. They have also not provided them with adequate resources
  • We are a long way from realising the ideal self-govt.
