India did intervene as peace mediators in the Sri Lankan Civil War, in 1984.
Sri Lanka was being internally destroyed by the militant organisation, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) who were demanding a separate state for Tamil speaking people in the country.
On request of the Lankan government and under severe international pressure, Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sri Lankan Prime Minister Jayawardhane signed a peace agreement whereby India agreed to send its peace keeping force (IPKF) to the country to protect its people from the LTTE.
