Indian Army
The Indian Army is the 2nd largest standing army in
the world. It is commanded by the Chief of Army Staff
COAS), who is a four-star General. The primary mission
of the Indian Army is to ensure national security and
mity, defending the natior from external aggression and
threats, and maintaining peace and security within its
borders. It is an all-volunteer force and comprises more
than 80% of the country's active defence personnel. It
with 1.129.900 active troops and 960,000 reserve troops.
The army operates 6 operational commands with the
basic field formation as a division and I training
command. Each command is headed by General Officer
Commanding-in-Chief with the rank of Lieutenant
General. The seven commands are-
1. Northern Command headquartered at Udampur.
2. Westen Command headquartered at Chandi-
3. South-westem Command headquartered at Jaipur.
4. Southem Command headquartered at Pune.
5. Central Command headquartered at Lucknow
6. Easter Command headquartered at Kolkata
7. Training Command headquartered at Shimla.
The Indian Army has been involved in four wars
with neighbouring Pakistan and one with China. Other
major operations undertaken by the army include
Operation Vijay. Operation Meghdoot and Operation
Cactus. Apart from conflicts, the army has also been an
active participant in numerous United Nations
peacekeeping missions including the ones in Cyprus,
Lebanon. Congo Angola, Cambodia, Vietnam. Namibia
El Salvador. Liberia Mozambique and Somalia
