there are behavioral scientists to study them. Indeed, there
are more, for the self is a topic that attracts endless specu-
lation and inquiry, both scholarly and not, on the part of
philosophers, theologians, novelists, and neuroscientists.

begin by throwing up their hands in mock despair: The
