indirect speech
he said to him" she is his sister
Answers
He said to him that she was his sister.
It is a transformation from direct speech to indirect speech.
- Direct Speech- We use Direct Speech when we try to describe what someone said with their own words.
Example:
1. Riya said to me "You can trust me on this".
Direct speech is generally used in stories or newspaper articles. Here the verb 'to say ' ( present form) or said (past form) is used but instead of this asked, replied and other verbs can also be used accordingly.
- Indirect Speech- We use Indirect Speech to report the thing said by someone without changing the tense and meaning. The tense within the inverted comas changes according to the first verb.
Example:
2. Riya told me that I could trust her on that.
Here some additional things are added. The tense used is simple present tense and it led to change the tense within the inverted comas. 'Said to' is changed into 'told'.
But whenever there will come another position, it can be changed into 'replied', 'requested', 'ordered', 'inquired' etc. 'That' is added when we join the sentences, but there are exceptions.
. At last, the 'this' changed into 'that', it is a perfect example where the speech is being reported.
Example:
Direct speech -
3. The police asked, " Do you know something about the accident? "
Indirect Speech -
4. The police inquired if I knew anything about the accident.
This example consists of the exceptions which are mentioned before.
