Indirectly, politics can be influenced through pressure groups, social movements and also by NGOs. The first two do not have any fixed membership as they are mass movements, as a result of which they need not take care of any interest group or lobby or work within any guideline. On the other hand, NGOs are formed with the sole aim of raising and resolving people-related issues, so they too are capable of influencing politics in an effective way.
Directly influencing politics would mean joining political parties or forming them and then trying to push issues of importance. A case in point would be the Anna Hazare movement. It was a very successful movement, but the party it spawned has been a complete failure. The party has already compromised on one major issue of the movement, viz. honesty and transparency, by aligning with people of doubtful integrity both inside and outside the party. As there are interest groups within the political parties, it is always not possible for right-thinking individuals or groups to influence the course of politics in a positive way.
