Herod's fathers was by descent, an Edomite, whose ancestors had converted to Judaism. Herod was raised as Jew.

After a while Herod married a beautiful lady and he had two son's.

He was died in Jericho, because or an painful, putrefying ill of uncertain cause. Two of Herod's son, Archelaus and Philip the Tetrarch dated his rule from 4 BCE.
