The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a group of states that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. As of 2012, the movement has 120 members.
It was established in 1961 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. An initiative of Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehruand Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito led to the first Conference of Heads of State or Government of Non-Aligned Countries.The term non-aligned movement appears first in the fifth conference in 1976, where participating countries are denoted as "members of the movement".

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was founded in 1961 by a group of countries that refused to take sides in the Cold War and proposed a “third way” between Western capitalism and Soviet communism for developing nations. Its founder, Yugoslavian strongman Josip Broz Tito, was trying to escape the iron grip of the Soviet Union, but he got Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia and India to join too.
