Harvesting animals is not our favourite part of homesteading but it is a necessary part, and we think the aspect of harvesting, processing, slaughtering or butchering - whatever you want to call it - provides the deepest connection with the land. It is the thing that makes homesteading the most real.

More than 100 million animals are reported killed by hunters each year. That number does not include the millions of animals for which kill figures are not maintained by state wildlife agencies.

It's ironic that, during a time when there is a movement towards more transparency in food production (witness the scrutiny over the meaning of “organic”), the basic fact of killing wild animals is being deflected by some toward the fuzzier, more nostalgic “harvest,” which conjures up images of Grandpa mowing the hay .

Harvesting is the process of gathering a ripe crop from the fields. Reaping is the cutting of grain or pulse for harvest, typically using a scythe, sickle, or reaper. On smaller farms with minimal mechanization, harvesting is the most labor-intensive activity of the growing season.

Manual system is the most common method of rice harvesting in Asia. ... It will take an additional labor to manually collect and haul the harvested crop. Harvesting can be done manually using sickles and knives, or mechanically with the use of threshers or combine harvesters.
