During the rule of Shivaji Maharaj, Shahirs and vasudev had their own importance.
Shahirs used to sing ‘powadas’ which were constructed to give glorified explanation of battles fought by Maharaj and his army.
This gave inspiration to all listening to them. Vasudev is the person who wanders from house to house in the morning singing religious songs.
In Shivaji Maharaj’s rule these people used to gather secret information which was useful for Maharaj.

Vasudev during Shivaji Maharaj rule worked as a spy for the king. Although, Vasudevs would sing religious songs by going from one house to other, yet they used to deliver significant information to the king.
On the other hand, Shahirs would sing ‘Powdas’, which was a way to glorify the achievements, of the king and his army.
