Inhalation and exhalation are collectively called breathing

Explanation:

  • Breathing is a physical process that include taking of oxygen from environment and expel Co2 from body
  • pO2 of atmosphere is higher than pO2 of alveoli. so oxygen enter into the body in a process of inhalation. during inhalation diaphragm and external intercoastal muscle contract, this will expand size of thoracic cavity and thus increase lungs volume, this decrease pulmonary pressure.
  • Now pulmonary pressure is less than atmospheric pressure.so the gas diffuse from high pressure zone to low pressure zone i.e. from atmosphere into lungs
  • pCo2 of atmosphere is lower than pCo2 of alveoli therefore Co2 moves from lungs into atmosphere. During exhalation diaphragm and external intercoastal muscle relaxed, this reduce the size of thoracic cavity, so the lung volume decreased and pulmonary pressure increased.
  • Now pulmonary pressure is higher than atmospheric pressure. so the gas move from lungs into atmosphere.
  • Respiration is a chemical process that include both Intake of O2 and metabolizing sugar in order to produce energy and release the Co2 produced as a byproduct during metabolizing of sugar. Respiration include breathing, pulmonary respiration, oxygen transport and tissue respiration.
  • So, particularly Inhalation and exhalation are collectively called breathing.
