to every action there will be equal n opposite reaction
as a person pushes water backward he tend to attain forward direction

According to Newton's 3rd law of motion ... every action has an equal and opposite reaction. So when a swim forward a person pushes water backwards , thus the water pushes the person forward .So to swim forward he should push the water back.
