Inside the clouds, everything was suddenly black. It was impossible to see anything outside the aeroplane. The old aeroplane jumped and twisted in the air. I looked at the compass. I could not believe my eyes : the compass was turning round and round. It was dead. It would not work.
(a) Why could the writer not see anything outside the aeroplane ?
(b) Why was the aeroplane twisting in the air ?
(c) Find out a word from the passage which means the same as turned and curved in different direction.
(d) Why could the writer not believe his eyes?

a) The writer's surroundings was pitch black and was covered in storm clouds, hence his vision failed him and he could not see anything outside the aeroplane.

b) The aeroplane was in a malfunction state as the storm has damaged it seriously. Moreover, the writer could not see as he was blinded by the storm and lost his sense of direction inside the storm. Hence the plane jumped and twisted.

c) The word from the passage which means the same as 'Turned and curved in different directions' is 'twisted'

Inside the clouds, everything was suddenly black.  It was impossible to see anything outside the  aeroplane. The old aeroplane jumped and twisted  in the air. I looked at the compass. I couldn’t believe  my eyes: the compass was turning round and round  and round. It was dead. It would not work!

d) The writer tried to navigate his way through the storm. He checked his compass to see which way he was travelling. However, the compass was spinning wildly and hence proved no use. He was in a horrific state and could not believe his eyes. He was completely lost in the storm.
