1. Read the given passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.
Our forests are our natural wealth. They cover one fifth of the country's land area. They
supply the wood for railways, building houses, and making furniture. They also supply fuel
for cooking and bamboo for paper-making. Sadly, forests have been cut down on a large
scale in the past few years. While the forests are disappearing, the demand for wood is
growing. This is because the population is increasing. So we must protect and develop our
forests. Van Mahotsava, a week-long tree-planting festival in India, is an important step in
this direction. It is celebrated between 1st and 7th July. Every year, lakhs of saplings are
planted all over the country to restore our forests.
