13 Interesting Facts About The Mughals

The accession of Babar heralded a new age in Indian history. The mighty Mughals ruled the Indian subcontinent for about 3 centuries, from 1526 to 1857. The six Great Mughals, viz Babar, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb built a fully consolidated powerful empire and gave India a gift of Mughal art, architecture, literature and food.  

Here are some interesting facts about the splendid Mughals. 

1. The Mughal dynasty in India was founded by Babar.

He was from Farghana ( now in present day Afghanistan). He was a direct descendant of Chenghis Khan from mother's side and that of Timur from his father's side. He made 4 attempts before establishing his rule in India. 

2. Babar was invited by Sangram Singh (Rana Sanga), Alam Khan Lodhi and Daulat Khan Lodhi ( all Indian rulers of different provinces) to invade India and defeat the powerful Lodhi Sultan- Ibrahim Lodhi.

Babar defeated Ibrahim in the 1st Battle of Panipat in 1526. 

3. Sher Shah Suri defeated Humayun in 1540 and established Afghan rule and ended the Mughal rule (for a shot period of time).

Akbar regained the empire back in the 2nd Battle of Panipat ( 1556). 

4. Akbar was appointed as the governor of Ghazni when he was just nine!
