We have many religions and regions in the country. We have the constitution being secular treating all religions equally. Yet there are some laws that pertain to each religion. The civil code respects certain traditions from each religion.
It is often felt that we should have a uniform civil code across the country, irrespective of religions. That will bring out a total change in the way we live. With no care or glance or importance given to any religion, the country will progress.
If such a code is introduced, there will be chaos in the country. The religious system is deeply rooted in India. The religious leaders and the systems have a hold on Indian people. So it is not possible to ignore the religions. Perhaps it is good that way. What we can do to improve law and order, or to bring about reforms, is that we make changes in each religion gradually. Over a decade with small changes paving a way for the major change, all religions will converge to a common platform.
Reforms are needed as the times are changing. The people want to live in a different way than before. They want to move into latest 21st century world rather than being in the 19th century history. Reforms are required because certain religions and traditions have resulted in imbalanced society or exploitation of women by men in the society.
In July, 2016 the central government under the leadership of Sri N. Modi asked the central law commission for the feasibility of a uniform civil code. So it is under evaluation at the moment. The background is that we can eliminate all complexities in the law, improve people's lives and be on par with the developed world.
The government , lawmakers, social thinkers, goodwill people, political activists, religious leaders , faithful followers should put their brains together to bring reforms in each religion. They should work towards making the country forward, by reducing the gaps and ill feelings among religions.
