Since the International Date line is completely political. ... TheInternational Date Line is an imaginary zig zag line on the surface of the earth roughly following the 180 degree meridian. Crossing the date linecauses the date to be changed exactlyby one day. Crossing the line from East to West , one loses a day .

Answer:

The Earth takes 24 hours to rotate through 360 degree (longitude). Hence, two places that are 15 degree of longitude apart have a difference of one hour. As the Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. This adds up to a difference of 24 hours or one day between east and west of 180 degree line of longitude.
