the rebellion of 1857 is also known as India's first war of Independence. on February 26,1857 the 19th BNI came to know about new cartridges which had a casing made fact, which had to be bitten off by mouth. the soilders refuse to use them and cancel next parade. on March 29,1857 at the Barackpore parade ground, near Calcutta, 29-year old mangel pandey of the 34th BNI, angered by recent actions of the east India Company, declared that he would rebel against his commanders. mangel pandey opened fire in the parade ground. he was court martialled on April 6 and he was hanged on April 8th. Meerut soilders killed their own European officers and seized the city rebellion sparde to Kanpur, lucknow, bareilly, jhashi, gwalior and arrah in bihar. at Kanpur the revolt was led by nana sahib, the adopt son of baji rao 2 .
