The discovery in the 1950s of carboranes, which are boron cage compounds containing carbon in the skeletal framework, stimulated a considerable research effort in this area which has opened a vast new field of unlimited dimensions. Much of the research on carboranes 75,85,157,186,188.198,225 involves the derivative chemistry of polyhedral molecules such as C2B10H12 and C2B5H7 and has been largely oriented toward the synthesis of heat-stable polymers. Hundreds of such compounds involving a wide variety of transition and main-group metals have been prepared, and this new field has in its short existence reached a surprisingly sophisticated level with rational synthetic routes and a qualitative theory of structure and bonding of considerable predictive power. The significance of the metallocarboranes in an ultimately practical sense has yet to be determined, although their exceptional stability, almost unlimited variety, and novel structures, and the possibility of unusual electronic or other properties, suggest that applications will one day be developed. However, the importance of metallocarboranes from a theoretical viewpoint is beyond doubt.
