No one knows what dark matter is or how to detect it. The race is on to find it.

One lab in South Dakota is hot on the trail. It's called the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment.

LUX scientists are trying to detect dark matter by catching it bumping into visible matter.

Even if dark matter and visible matter regularly bump into each other, the interaction is probably very fleeting and easy to miss.

LUX scientists regularly flood this giant underground tank with liquid xenon at a temperature of about minus-148 degrees Fahrenheit.

Earth isn't the only place signs of dark matter might come from. A giant telescope at the IceCube neutrino lab in Antarctica is searching dark matter evidence coming from solar radiation blasts.
