ANS: Jet streams are the narrow belt of high altitude westerly winds in the troposphere. They blow at a fast speed of about 110km/h in summers to about 184km/h in winters. The westerly jet streams are responsible for bringing western cyclonic disturbances to north west India resulting in rainfall in winters.

The Jet Stream is related as Indian monsoons, a source mechanism for lightning storms. The jet has its peaks, with different levels of pressure and temperature. The crest represents high pressure and low pressure valley, this occurs when it exceeds the tropics, more or less in the center of India. Cyclones begin to form in the valley, opposite situations occur on the crest, both create convergence with the air above and below the jet. Therefore its path is not linear in one place occurs cyclonic formations and in other anticyclonic formations.
