To Find :

  • Iron is more reactive than copper. we need to show this by an activity.

Activity :

›› Take three iron nails and clean them by rubbing with sand paper.

›› Take two test tubes and mark them as (A) and (B).

›› Take 10ml Copper sulphate Solution in each test tube.

›› Tie two nails with a thread and immerse them carefully in copper sulphate Solution in test tube B for 20 minutes .

›› For comparison keep the other iron nail aside.

›› After 20 minutes keep out the nail from the copper sulphate Solution . Now, compare the intensity of copper sulphate Solutions in test tubes (A) and (B) .

›› Compare the iron nail with the nail which is kept aside .

›› The nail which is dipped in copper sulphate Solution become brownish in colour and the blue colour of copper sulphate Solution fades.

☣️ About reaction :-

In the above reaction , iron nail (Fe) displaced or removed copper (Cu) from the Solution of copper sulphate (CuSO4) .

The above reaction is known as displacement reaction .

Equation

  • Fe + CuSO4 ⟶ FeSO4 + Cu

♻️ Displacement Reaction :-

Displacement Reaction is a reaction in which a more reactive element displaced the less reactive element from it's Solution.

\mathfrak{\huge{\orange{\underline{Solution:-}}}}

\large{\underline{\rm{\pink{\bf{Aim:-}}}}}

Show that iron is more reactive than copper.

Formula: \sf Fe(s)+CuSO_4(aq) \longrightarrow FeSO_4(aq)+Cu(s)

\large{\underline{\rm{\pink{\bf{Apparutus:-}}}}}

❖ Iron nails

❖ Copper sulfate

❖ A beaker

\large{\underline{\rm{\pink{\bf{Procedure:-}}}}}

➺ Take an iron nail.

➺ Take a beaker and make a copper sulfate (white crystals) solution in it.

➺ Now dip the iron nail in the copper sulfate.

➺ Leave the dipped iron nail in the solution for a few minutes.

\large{\underline{\rm{\pink{\bf{Observation:-}}}}}

You will notice that there is a colour change in the solution which is caused due to the displacement of Copper from it solution. And since the replacing metal should be more reactive for displacement to take place, so it is verified that iron is more reactive than copper.

\mathfrak{\huge{\orange{\underline{Notes:-}}}}

⚓ What is displacement reaction?

A displacement reaction is the one wherein the atom or a set of atoms is displaced by another atom in a molecule.

Example: Reaction of iron nails with copper sulfate solution.

⚓ Why does a displacement reaction occur?

A single displacement reaction occurs when another element in a compound is replaced by an element.

A metal only substitutes for a metal, and a nonmetal only substitutes for a nonmetal. Only a more reactive element in the compound with which it reacts can replace the other element.
