Iron pipes are generally coated with zinc by the galvanization process (or galvanizing as it is most commonly referred). This is the process of applying a protective zinc layer onto the upper exposed surface of steel or iron in order to prevent rusting. Rusting occurs when iron or steel come in contact with oxygen and it results in a formation of reddish rough and coarse layer on top of the surface.

Zinc does not allow moisture to come in contact with the iron particles. It is highly corrosion resistant. The most common method is hot-dip galvanizing, in which parts are submerged in a bath of molten zinc.
