The reaction is as follows....
3Fe + 4H2O ——› Fe3O4 + 4H2
Here, Iron gets oxidized and forms triferric tetraoxide.
Fe3O4 is formed when Fe2O3 get combined with FeO.

Explanation:
When metals react with steam the product produced are metal oxide and hydrogen gas.
When red hot iron reacts with steam to form triferric tetraoxide....... In this reaction so much heat is produced and get's hydrogen gas formed which catches fire and burn explosively....
