Iron sinks in water, wood floats in water. If we tied an iron piece to the same volume of wood piece, and dropped them in water, will it sink or float? Make a guess and find out whether your guess is correct or wrong with an experiment. Give reasons.

actually, density of iron is 7.874 g/cm³
density of wood is 0.5 - 0.9 g/cm³ [we assume 0.7 g/cm³ for experiment. ]
density of water is 1g/cm³

Let's take wood and iron block .
volume of iron block = volume of wood block = V

then, mass of iron block = 7.874V g
mass of wood block = 0.7V g
so, total mass = 7.874V +0.7V
= 8.574V g
and total volume = V+ V = 2V
so, density of system of iron and wood blocks =8.574V/2V= 4.287 g/cm³ > 1g/cm³ [density of water]

you see density of system of iron and wood blocks is greater than density of water.
now, according to Archimedes principle, body will sink in liquid when density of body is greater than density of liquid.

hence, system of iron and wood blocks sinks in water.
