Silas was accused by William Dane and other church members of stealing the church's money from the deacon's room.
Silas knewed that it was William who betrayed him but he didn't say anything thinking that God will clear him. But when the church members drew lots to found the guilty he was disillusioned and declared that there was no just God. He accused William of theft but to no avail. Sarah broke their engagement and married William Dane and Silas left lantern yard forever.
