The poet is afraid of the snake and at the same time he wants the snake to stay at his water trough for some more time. his inner voice tells him to kill the snake but still he likes him to be his honored guest. after treating the snake with reverence. he throws a log at it to kill it. this is the irony in the poem.

There is one more irony.

When the snake was drinking the water, he was most dangerous as he would have bitten the poet but the poet did not harm him. Contrary to this when the snake was going back to the earth and was not dangerous at all, the poet threw a log at him. This is ironical.
