Ridge and furrow is an archaeological pattern of ridges (Medieval Latin sliones) and troughs created by a system of ploughing used in Europe during the Middle Ages, typical of the open field system. It is also known as Rig (or rigg) and furrow, mostly in the North East of England and Scotland.

In the early stages of tree planting, one furrow alongside the tree row may be sufficient but as the trees develop than two or more furrows can be constructed to provide sufficient water. Sometimes a special zig-zag system is used to improve the spread of water
