Answer :

Terylene (Dacron) is a product of ethylene glycol (Ethane-1,2-diol) and terephthallic acid (Benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid).

It is a polyester copolymer which is prepared by condensation or step growth polymerisation.

Copolymer : Polymer made up of two or more types of monomers. e.g., Nylon-6,6, Buna-S, Backelite etc.

Condensation polymer : Formed by combination of monomers with elimination of simple molecules like water, alcohol, ammonia, etc. e.g., dacron, nylon-6,6 etc.

Learn More :

  • Glyptal (Alkyd resin) is a product of ethylene glycol and phthalic acid.
  • PHBV is a product of 3-Hydroxybutanoic acid and 3-Hydroxypentanoic acid.
