Air is a mixture of various gases like oxygen(21%), nitrogen(79%), methane, hydrogen and various other gases. Mixtures are those substances which have the same composition throughout. They can be separated into their various constituents by simple physical methods. For eg: Different gases can be obtained from Air, by making it undergo the process of fractional distillation. Mixtures can be either homogeneous or heterogeneous.Air is not a compound because a compound into its various constituents only be chemical and electro-chemical reactions. Also, mixtures show the properties of their constituents. For example when you light a candle there is air around the flame of the candle which provides oxygen to the flame, as we know that oxygen supports fire. Therefore, which can conclude that Air, which is a mixture, shows the properties of one of its constituents i.e. oxygen. On the other hand, a compound doesn't show the properties of its constituents, rather compounds have completely different properties. So, from all these above properties of mixtures and compounds, we can conclude that air IS a MIXTURE, and NOT a COMPOUND.
