Yes, caste still is an important factor for matrimonial practices in India. Indians still have not been completely successful to break psychological attachment with the age old custom. Even though education has taken roots even in the remotest parts of India, difference between people on the grounds of his or her birth has not been able to classiácation on the basis of merit. Whenever a marriage relation is agreed upon, the árst question that still arises is the caste. It is still believed by many that one should not marry beyond one's caste. If a Brahmin marries a Brahmin, then the child born is also a Brahmin. But if a Brahmin marries a Dalit, the child is believed to be outcaste. Our Hindu Marriage Act, however, makes no mention of inter-caste marriage.Under section 5 of Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, there are no restrictions on the individuals regarding caste or religion.
