A little more than a month ago, the Environmental Working Group broke the news that some of your all-time favorite snacks had levels of weed killer in them. Since then, the world has learned of tens of other scary food-related incidents, so it felt time to circle back on what may have been the farthest-reaching one: Cheerios.

Senior science advisor for EWG Olga Naidenko, Ph.D, told Delish that while the organization found the weed killer Roundup in portions of more than 20 popular oat-based foods (Cheerios, Quaker Oats, and Nature Valley products among them), they are not recommending you throw away any food you've already bought.

12 Things You Should Know Before Eating Cheerios

"The risks of glyphosate [Ed. note: glyphosate is the active herbicide component in Roundup] exposure are long-term, so EWG is not recommending to throw away all the purchased food supplies, but rather to consider this information when making future purchases," she said. "Until then, EWG advises families to switch to organic brand oat products." Organic brands were found to have much less glyphosate in their tested portions, "likely due to cross-contamination."

This is because it is long-term exposure to the chemical that has been linked to elevated risk of cancer, so "a single meal is just a small share of the overall health impact." But again, "many years of eating these glyphosate-laden foods would increase the cancer risk."

Naidenko explains while there have been "published statements of commitment to sourcing glyphosate-free oats" from organic oat brands, larger, non-organic companies haven't made the same commitment, at least not publicly.

Following EWG's original report, though, General-Mills issued a statement saying “Our products are safe and without question they meet regulatory safety levels." Quaker gave a similar statement: "We proudly stand by the safety and quality of our Quaker products. Any levels of glyphosate that may remain are significantly below any limits of the safety standards set by the EPA and the European Commission as safe for human consumption."

Here is your answer,

==============================================

Currently on the Cheerios website, General Mills claims their Cheerios varieties are a part of a healthy diet because they are low in saturated fat, naturally cholesterol free, can help lower cholesterol, are made with whole grains like oats, and provide essential vitamins and minerals.

It seemed like the perfect baby food: low in sugar and fat and easily dissolvable so it posed little choking hazard.

But it turns out that Cheerios are remarkably high in salt.

Studies show that three grams of soluble fiber daily from whole grain oat foods - like Cheerios - in a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.

They contain a good amount of fiber and are low in sugar, all those things that we look for [in a healthy cereal.

HOPE THIS HELPS YOUU :)

AND STAY BLESSED.
