Object distance (u) is always negative in any case.
Focal length for concave(lens or mirror) is always negative.
Focal length for convex(lens or mirror) is always positive.

No it is not negative in all cases
1)In concave lenses object distance is always negative and focal also in negative except one case.
2)In convex lens focal length is positive in all cases and object distance is also.
3)In convex lens focal is always positive except one case and object distance is always negative.
