On the contrary, they are not independent at all.
If events A and B are mutually exclusive, that means if A is true, B cannot be true, and vice versa.
If events A and B are independent, A occurring does not affect the chances of B occurring in any way, and vice versa.
This is a contradiction, as if A and B are mutually exclusive, A does affect B quite significantly- if A is true, B cannot be true.
You can either flip a head or a tail, but not both. These two events are not independent, as if you flip a head, it is impossible you just flipped a tail.
