It was a hot summer day in my village during July 2004, the year Bihar was hit by one of the worst floods in its history. I was 9 and my school friend persuaded me to try swimming in River Gandak - a tributary of The Ganges.

Finally, one Saturday afternoon, I sneaked off the house on my bike to meet my friend near the River. I was too afraid to inform my parents about it as they would have never permitted me to try my little adventure - swimming in flood prone river without any prior experience. The water level was very high and my mind was too juvenile to understand the situation. My friend promised to protect me as he was good at swimming. Looking at some old boys swimming in the river I gathered enough courage to take a dip.

As soon as I was feeling comfortable in the water, I found myself drifting apart from the bank. It took me too long to perceive that the mighty river had taken control of me. Neither I knew any safety measures, nor I had learnt any tricks. I immersed once. Being the only child to my parents, I plead to the God to save me while my Mom’s beautiful face hovered in my mind. Thanks to Buoyant force, I moved up the water, still being carried away, and filled my lungs with air! And the cycle continued for a while. Until… I let myself go. Water water everywhere but I could still feel my tears in there!

Next thing I remember was being pulled by my hair, carried out of the water and driven towards the bank of Gandak. No words to explain how it felt - as if I had been given another life. I vaguely remember being surrounded by some boys when a man in his 40’s was asking about my whereabouts. Surprisingly, my friend was no where to be seen.

I came back home - damp, pale and exhausted, My father was busy with some construction work. I went to my mom, buried my head into her lap and clutched her hands tightly. I said, “Teach me to swim.”

P.S. I was really lucky to have survived but, each year thousands of Indians are not as lucky! Bihar is India’s most flood-prone State, with 76 percent of the population (80 million) in the state living under the recurring threat of flood devastation every year. India need to build an even stronger and more efficient National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) (I am sure they will!) to minimise vulnerability to floods and consequent loss of lives, livelihood systems, property and damage to infrastructure and public utilities.

Suman : Do you know what happened last Saturday ?

Varun : What happened ? What was that ?

Suman : While I was coming home I saw a dog badly bleeding on the road.

Varun : Ah ! What did you do then ?

Suman : I took it home and nurse the wound.

Varun : That I was very kind of you. How is it now ?

Suman : It's not completely cured. It is still limping. It wags its tail when it sees me.

Varun : Why does it do so ?

Suman : I think, it wants to thank me.
