Leftovers can be kept for three to four days in the refrigerator. Be sure to eat them within that time. After that, the risk of foodpoisoning increases. If you don'tthink you'll be able to eat leftovers within four days, freeze them immediately.

Answer:
It is a good practise to keep leftover food in the refrigerator because bacteria and fungai need high temp. to grow. as in today's time temp. is increasing . so it will lead to the growth of fungai and bacteria .
To prevent this , we put leftover food in low temp. that is in refrigerator to prevent pathogens (bacteria , fungai etc.) growth.
or generally , food also can react with oxygen ...that is known as oxidation of food . also known as rancidity.
That make food steal or have foul smell.
Its also very dangerous for health.
It can cause food poisening etc.
So.
To prevent food from stealing or pathogen free...we should put it in refrigerator
