Yes, it is completely random.female cell have X bearing chromosome . Half of the sperms released contain X bearing chromosomes and half Y bearing chromosomes. It entirely depends on the matter of chance that which chromosome fuses with the female egg cell. If X bearing sperm fuses than the combination is XX which is a daughter. If Y bearing sperm fuses than the combination is XY which is a son.
