Is light a matter?Give reasons for your answer

tanupandey: light Is not matter. Light is just light - it has its own qualities. Light is made up of thing called photons, and these photons can possess some of the properties of matter... for example, they are always moving and when they move they exert a very small force on an object. Light is not matter as much as it is energy. because matters are made up of atoms and molecules. so it is not matter.

Light is matter commonly called as the fourth state of matter known as PLASMA.e.g we fluorescent tubes bulbs emitting light are form of plasma

aban625: hey, plasma is different . It can be generated by applying enormous amount of light energy in vacuum in presence of inert gas.

the answer for ur Q is No, light is not a matter. Because matter is something that occupies space whereas not in case of light.

aban625: Then you mean to say that it is not energy
yxvxkx25: no but as a whole light can not be taken as matter, though it includes photons which occupies a little space but that is almost negligible.
aban625: Just think , in black hole gravitation force act on light.
aban625: And according to Newton's Gravitational formulae
aban625: If an object has mass then gravitational force will act on it.
yxvxkx25: But light at last doesn't fulfills all the conditions of a matter i.e why it can't be concluded as a matter
aban625: this a research type question
aban625: and it may be or may not be a matter
yxvxkx25: But at present it is not taken as matter
yxvxkx25: so for now it can be concluded that it's not a matter
