The marigold species most common for home gardening is Tagetes patula, which is a true annual. Its life cycle lasts one season regardless of climate. 

The marigold family does contain perennial species, too, but they wouldn't be winter hardy in places with cold weather. So, if you live in a place that gets below freezing, you'd have to treat them like annuals in the garden anyway.
