OVER LOADING FOR A LONG TIME MAY LEAD TO SHORT CIRCUITING.
You can take an example of a wire that is over loaded, the wire will get heated for sure. after some time due to heating the outer covering of wire may melt.
The live and neutral wire comes in direct contact and a popping sounds can be encountered due to interaction of the two wires( neutral and live) which were carrying different potentials.this phenomenon is short circuiting.
