Is phenol acidic in nature?? Explain.

AbhishGS: It is type of alcohol which is nearly acid.
jefflynSam: Phenol is a very weak acid and the position of equilibrium lies well to the left. Phenol can lose a hydrogen ion because the phenoxide ion formed is stabilised to some extent. The negative charge on the oxygen atom is delocalised around the ring

Yes, this statement is true. Phenol is acidic on nature. Having said that, it should be kept in context that phenol is rather a weak acid.

Phenol has the ability to lose a hydrogen ion. This again is for the simple reason that phenoxied ion is relatively stable.

The properties of phenol surely indicate that it is an acid is nature.
