Firstly, to answer this question, we need to know the basic knowledge of science. everything around us is a matter, whether living or non-living things(living things= body cell; non-living things= plastics, water). matter is anything that has mass and occupies space(bear in mind). the air around us is constituents of matter. this can be proved by fills the balloon with air.

when talking about living and non-living things is a form of matter, every matter is made up of atoms. the smaller component of an atom is called subatomic particles. it consists of proton, neutron and electron. these subatomic particle is the simplest substance. it cannot be created nor be destroyed. an atom has mass. the basic unit of an atom is called element., it cannot be separated by chemical means into any simpler components. Hence, their energy are conserved. the energy can only be transformed from one form to another. this are known as law of conservation of energy.

Since everything is made up of atom, it is difficult to make an inference whether the smell is a matter or not(p/s: smell in other word is known as aroma). This is because, an aroma are still exists in the state of vacuum, but our nose are not able to work in a vacuum(vacuum= a space that is entirely devoid of matter). The reason the smell are still exists in vacuum can be proved through the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon substance e.g. benzene. The hydrocarbon are compound of which chemically combined covalently(by sharing the electron between two element). if we refer to the chemical structure of hydrocarbon, it is undeniable to say that the smell are not present if the substance are to be put in a vacuum. To understand of what i explaining, you have to understand the concept of law of conservation of energy ingeniously.

As conclusion, whether the smell is a form of energy or not, i can say YES, IT IS A FORM OF ENERGY because smell can cause cancer(benzene are known as carcinogenic substance). whatever things happens need an energy to cause things happen. same goes as the light which enable us to see things. light came from the sun or lamp. are the light is a matter? definitely no. but the light is an energy that came from matter. think about it……..

But to conclude that the smell as a form of matter, it is still a subject under discussion(refer back to the concept of matter which i highlighted in first paragraph). This is because, people often to ask “how does air carries smell?” this question is academically debate because in order our nose to be able to catch aroma/smell, there must be something need to carry the smell to reach to our nose. don’t you think the question is highly reasonable? life are so wonderful!
