Yes, compass works in the space too. For clear conception, think about the celestial body. They all are in a constant position as well as in a constant motion, controlled by a magnetic field, can also be referred as the combination gravitational force of attraction of the celestial bodies from which the concept of universal gravitational has come. And where there is the sense of magnetic field there without any doubt the compass will work. Even the direction in the space is located by the astronomers with the help of compass.

For understanding about the presence of magnetic force and magnetic field in the space we can think about the natural phenomenons which occurs regularly due to the rotation and revolution of the celestial bodies and depends on the force of attraction which acts upon the constellation such as occurrence of day and night, changing of seasons, high tide and low tide, changing of the phases of the moon etc.

So, it can be concluded that there is the presence of magnetic field in the space and as a result the compass works in the space.

But, now it depends on you if you use the term space as vacuum then remember that compass will never work vacuum.
