The ink that we use has water as the solvent and the dye is soluble in it.as the water rises on the filter paper it takes along with it the dye particles.
usually,a dye is a mixture of 2 or more colours.

No it is a mixture of different compounds. We can see it by the process of chromatography.

*Take a strip of filter paper
*Draw a line using pencil approx 3 or 2 cm above the edge
*Put a small drop of ink (which is water soluble) at the centre of the line
*Lower the filter paper into jar/glass/beaker/test tube containing water so that the drop of ink on paper is just above the water level and leave it undisturbed.
*When the water rises on the filter paper we will observe that the dye particles (or compounds) are separated.
